I’m a synesthete. People who are synesthetes, or have synesthesia, have sensory experiences beyond what is generally considered the norm. For example, I see color values in numbers. Numbers also have personalities and intrigues with one another. When I do math, there are entire conversations going on between numbers and the whole process takes place shrouded in complex shades of gray. It makes things interesting to say the least. (Algebra is its own circle of hell).

But what about art? I draw, paint, and make prints and collages. It all feels like a great, delicious adventure. Yes, I used the word delicious. None of my works is edible (yet), but the pleasures of manipulating color, brushstroke, texture and pattern are so palpable that they call to mind the language of eating. It’s so much fun, it feels so good, you can almost taste it. For me, colors have flavors as well as tactile qualities. And stories to tell. My favorites have something akin to their own emotional profiles.

Although I experiment in a variety of media, I work primarily in pastels, watercolors, colored pencil, inks and acrylics. These allow me the freest rein to indulge my passion for making art saturated with vivid color. The colors I use are rich and heavily pigmented. Unequivocal. I avoid non-committal hues.

My portfolio reflects my intense interests in science, the natural world, philosophy and religion. The Earth, Sea, Sky, and Fire collections are inspired by the complexity, profligacy, violence, and allure of nature and the universe. Creed contains works based in manifestos, proverbs and symbols of faith. The collages of the Map collection document what happens when I stray from the beaten path to see alternative possibilities for my paintings as I deconstruct and then combine them with different elements in new ways.
